Work with local communities to promote conservation

The major challenge faced by the conservation and community development program is to reduce the pressure on the natural resources as a result of shifting slash-and-burn agriculture and unsustainable consumptive use of wild animals. The program aims to address this threat by building the capacity of the local community to develop biodiversity-friendly income generating activities, through micro-enterprise development and job creation.

WWF CBNRM Project – With this in mind WWF-SARPO has been involved in assisting SRN with the development of a Community Based Natural Resource Management project.
This project proposal was designed in November 2000. In November and December last year the procurement of equipment was finally done – a computer, a generator, a motorcycle and a Land Rover, were purchased. The construction of houses to accommodate the WWF team of community officers was also initiated under a building contract with the local communities. In April this year, a team of 4 community officers was hired. This team is already in the Reserve working in 3 communities. The focus of their work goes towards:

  • the improvement of the natural resources management knowledge and skills of Community Based Organization (CBO) leaders
  • the capacity building of the CBO
  • the participatory land use planning and zonation and the selection and development of appropriate NRM options
  • the participatory development of regulations for the use and management of natural resources.
