Conservation and Community Development Program

The Niassa Conservation and Community Development Program was designed under the overall goal of securing the long-term conservation of the globally significant biodiversity on the Niassa Reserve for present and future generations.

The Program has three main components, namely: (i) biodiversity conservation and management; (ii) promotion and implementation of wildlife-based tourism and (iii) community development based on sustainable use of natural resources;

It envisions to achieve the following objectives:

(I) to conserve and manage Niassa’s biodiversity, promote its wilderness quality and use the Reserve as a reservoir for biodiversity in the region;

(II) to strengthen the institutional capacity of the management authority;

(III) to generate a local economy that can help finance the reserve management activities and community upliftment by providing quality ecotourism and safari experiences; and

(IV) to establish and promote mechanisms for the sustainable use of the natural resources

(V) to build the capacity of the local communities to participate as partners in the development activities.
